A report released by the security firm CloudSEK highlighted that India has been attracting massive cyberattacks and stands second while the US topped the list as the most attacked nation. As per the threat landscape report for the year2024, about 95 Indian firms were exposed to cyberattacks, while in the US, this number was recorded as 140. Israel stood at third place in the list of most attacked nations, where 57 of its entities were targeted.
The attackers are targeting big nations because of their digital dominance and infrastructure, along with the likelihood of hitting the gold mine to make big gains upon being successful in their attack attempt.
In India, while digging deep into the attack data, it was seen that the Banking & Finance sector faced the most attacks pertaining to 20 entities belonging to this industry. It was followed by the government and PSU sector with 13 entities, followed by healthcare(10) and education (9). There were 108 ransomware incidents reported across the country, and the biggest compromise was exposing 850 million records of Indian citizens from Star Health, Hi-Tech group, and Allied Insurance customers data.
Looking at the ransomware attacks, LockBit topped the list with 20 incidents, followed by Killsec with 15 incidents, and 12 incidents were related to the Ransomhub ransomware group. As per CloudSEK, these sectors were specificallytargeted due to their critical reliance on digital infrastructure and the sensitive nature of the data they hold.
The scale of data theft, ransomware incidents, and the sheer volume of records sold underscore the severity of the challenges faced by India, with the advent of AI further complicating cybersecurity in India.
