Apple on Sept. 16 released its latest desktop operating system update, macOS 15, also known as Sequoia. However, the software update has reportedly disrupted the functionality of several prominent security tools created by providers such as CrowdStrike, Microsoft and SentinelOne, among others. Users and developers have taken to social media and Mac-focused Slack channels to express their frustration over the issues caused by the update.

The issue with macOS Sequoia not playing nice with cybersecurity tools was first discovered after some Mac users who upgraded reported that they were experiencing network connection issues on social media. Frustrated consumers claim that SentinelOne, Microsoft, ESET, CrowdStrike, and other security products were broken by the update. When the impacted tools were turned off, the network connectivity issue was resolved. CrowdStrike reportedly told users not to update to the latest macOS version, citing changes in the network stack. The company said that although Apple was made aware of the compatibility issues, a patch was not expected.

Although the exact reason for these issues is still unknown, reports suggest that network or firewall-related issues may be at play. A communication from a CrowdStrike Sales Engineer emphasized the intricacies of the macOS Sequoia network stack, implying that the operating system’s support would be postponed while the business addresses these issues. The Engineer said, “There’s quite a lot going on with the changes in the network stack,”.

The creator of DoubleYou, a Mac and iOS security startup, Patrick Wardle, expressed his worries regarding the ongoing difficulties developers encounter with each new update from Apple. Wardle said, “As a creator of macOS security tools, it’s extremely frustrating to deal with (understandably) upset users who repeatedly blame your tools for breaking their Macs.” He underlined that Apple needs to put more effort into thoroughly testing its software before it is released.

While glitches and interruptions are common with new software updates and patches, thorough software testing and beta releases frequently assist in fixing problems prior to product launch. However, if they are not tested, changes made between the beta and release might occasionally result in problems after launch.
