A new cyber scam is targeting drivers across the UK and Europe, where two criminal groups have found a clever way to exploit something as simple as parking. Scammers are preying on naive drivers by placing fake QR codes on parking meters; when drivers scan the codes, they are routed to spooky websites that mimic major parking apps like PayByPhone. A payment that appears to be ordinary quickly turns into a trap, leaving victims open to fraud and heavy fines. Netcraft researchers discovered this growing threat, which is surprising drivers in busy city centers and tourist areas.

The moment victims input personal details, like their car’s information and payment card numbers, the scam kicks into high gear. Drivers not only expose themselves to financial theft, but they also unknowingly skip registering their vehicles, setting themselves up for a double blow: fraud and a parking ticket. This scheme has taken off across the UK, with tourist-heavy cities like London, Brighton, and Aberdeen becoming prime targets. Even when paying for a car parking space, unsuspecting visitors can easily fall victim to these traps.

Let’s understand this with an example. While walking through a busy city square, Kristen needed to pay for parking. She saw the app everyone was using and thought it looked convenient. She quickly downloaded the app and entered her car and payment details, feeling content. Hours later, she received a notification about unusual activity on her account. She realized the app was fake and had stolen her login information. Now, her bank account was at risk, and her car had not been registered for parking. This is an excellent reminder that there is no such thing as a free lunch when it comes to online convenience. Unforeseen risks always accompany it.

There have been reports of similar scams in the US and Canada, which prompted the FBI to issue warnings. That is why experts advise people to avoid QR codes and download parking applications from reliable app stores only.

As QR code scams get more advanced, it is essential to stay alert. Cybercriminals are finding new ways to deceive people, so being extremely careful is necessary. Be wary of scanning any QR code when you are out in public, particularly in areas you are unfamiliar with. A fake, malicious website attempting to steal your personal details may be the destination of that link. You can protect yourself from falling for these frauds by always verifying the source and using only trustworthy apps or platforms. You can avoid falling for a phishing trap if you are careful enough.
